List of Long Term Senators: There Are Far Too Many In Number

If you read my last post,  I wrote about term limits.   Here is a list of long serving U.S. Senators.

Lets start with those in office more the twenty years.

1.    Robert Byrd (D-WV:                    January 3, 1959
2     Daniel Inouye (D-HI)                   January 3, 1963
3     Patrick Leahy (D-VT)                  January 3, 1975

15     Mitch McConnell (R-KY)            January 3, 1985
16     Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)               January 15, 1985
17     Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)               January 3, 1987
18     Richard Shelby (R-AL)               January 3, 1987
19     John McCain (R-AZ)                  January 3, 1987
20     Harry Reid (D-NV)                        January 3, 1987
21     Kit Bond (R-MO)                        January 3, 1987
22     Kent Conrad (D-ND)                 January 3, 1987
23     Herb Kohl (D-WI)                        January 3, 1989
24     Joe Lieberman (D-CT)         January 3, 1989
25     Daniel Akaka (D-HI)                  May 16, 1990

So 25 present Senators have been in office more then twenty years.   One from the 1950's,  One from the 1960's (down from 2),  six from the 1970's,  16 from the 1980's.

The following have been in office at least ten years.

26     Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)       November 10, 1992

33     Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX)         June 14, 1993
34     Jim Inhofe (R-OK)     November 17, 1994
35     Olympia Snowe (R-ME)     January 3, 1995
36     Jon Kyl (R-AZ)           January 3, 1995
37     Ron Wyden (D-OR)     February 6, 1996
38     Sam Brownback (R-KS)     November 7, 1996
39     Pat Roberts (R-KS)     January 3, 1997
40     Richard Durbin (D-IL)     January 3, 1997
41     Tim Johnson (D-SD)     January 3, 1997
42     Jack Reed (D-RI)     January 3, 1997
43     Mary Landrieu (D-LA)     January 3, 1997
44     Jeff Sessions (R-AL)     January 3, 1997
45     Susan Collins (R-ME)     January 3, 1997
46     Mike Enzi (R-WY)       January 3, 1997
47     Chuck Schumer (D-NY)     January 3, 1999
48     Jim Bunning (R-KY)          January 3, 1999
49     Mike Crapo (R-ID)        January 3, 1999
50     Blanche Lincoln (D-AR)     January 3, 1999
51     George Voinovich (R-OH)    January 3, 1999
52     Evan Bayh (D-IN)         January 3, 1999

If you use my ten year rule 52 senators would have to go home  right now (actually more would have to go).    A full 50 percent has been in office more then a decade.   And that doesn't count years some served in the House.   Most of these folks aren't going anywhere anytime soon.   We could have 52 new faces in the Senate if we rid it of those that were in office already in the last century.

Yet Another Reason There Should Be Term Limits in Congress: Teddy Kennedy

As the media saints the recently departed Teddy Kennedy,  the reality of his life sometimes does get past the gatekeepers of the "mainstream media" once in a while.    ABC Buries Harsh Kennedy Obit,  One That Labels Him a 'Failure' in the Middle of the Night.   Of course it was in the middle of the night so even fewer people saw it, and this brave reporter will undoubtedly be shown the door shortly.

I can go over the many failures of Teddy Kennedy,  but there are many places you can find that kind of history of him,  so I won't (they are there, just don't bother with the mainstream media).    I am not like one of those liberal blogger's who slander and are vile when a well known conservative passes.   So don't look for it here.

But the biggest fact of Teddy Kennedy's life remains.    That he was in the U.S. Senate from age 30 to his death at 77.    That is a loooooonnnng time.   Way to long!

Yes,  he isn't the only one.   That record belongs to the still serving Democrat Senator Byrd of West Virginia  at 50 years, 7 months.   If I were a resident of West Virginia I wouldn't be too happy he hasn't stepped down.    Since he hasn't been in the Senate much lately due to his bad health.   Like he has much of a chance of getting better!    So that state has really only had one senator lately (and I use the word late lightly).   Of course the other senator is John Rockefeller so they don't have the best and brightest to begin with.   Byrd has been in office longer then Hawaii has been a state!

There have been a total of twenty-five senators that have been in office more then 33 years!   All but two served during the twentieth and/or into the twenty-first  century.    Don't get me wrong since most of the long servicing senators were Democrats,  long serving senators are bad from any party.    I think it has lead to some of the problems we have today.   The founding fathers would have never  wanted long serving politicians,  the average voter probably doesn't either,  but it's  hard to remove a long-timer, even a relatively unpopular one.

The founding fathers  envisioned the citizen legislator.  The guy that takes time from his business or job to serve his country in Congress. The guy that  then goes back to what he was doing before that,  after a short time in office.   We really don't have that at the federal level anymore.  Most of these guy's have never had real jobs or businesses.   I think that is as bad as the fact that most are lawyers as well.

Some states like Texas and Indiana do better at not creating the carrier politician.   Others like Illinois are as bad as Washington.    Indiana statesmen are part time,  and the pay is low so you have to have a real job.   Texas legislation only meets once every two years for a mandated time, and they can't run over.    The time needs to be very limited to keep these guys from becoming Teddy Kennedy's.

The point is that nobody should be a carrier politician.   Or at least a lot fewer of them.  Congress becomes too much like a college campus where reality and facts become faint and distant.     They become so they don't understand the problems they are causing people with stupid tax laws and regulations.   They don't understand they are the main reason why many places in our country like Gary and Detroit get left behind.

The longer one is in Washington D.C.  the easier it is to do what they do in that town.    Things happen that would never happen if you had gone back home already.    It becomes your reality,  which is not reality anywhere else.   Notice how many, when they are "retired",  don't go back to their "home" district.   They take jobs as  lobbyists, etc in D.C.

So what should those  limits be?

I have been thinking about that.     The House is easier,  since the terms are only two years.   Maybe no more then three terms.     The Senate is harder since the terms are six years.   Since it's that long and two terms gives you 12 years in Washington,  one term may be the limit.    Of course the hard part is the one that wants to move up from the House to the Senate,   there should be limits on both House and Senate terms,  because even under my plan,  one can be in Washington 12 years.   Maybe Senate terms should be shorter.

Or maybe a lifetime total of ten years.   So if you have served for three terms in the House you can only serve part (4 years) of a Senate term, opening up even more spots for new blood for the other 2 years.

All this gives more people the opportunity to serve.  We could have some fresh ideas.   I can't image Kennedy had a fresh idea in decades.   These long-termers block more talented people from ever setting foot in Congress.    Terms limits have kept presidents from serving longer then eight years (thankfully we never have to have another day of a Bill Clinton presidency).   So why not Congress?

So what do you think?

California So Broke, Schwarzenegger Holds Garage Sale

California is so broke,  Governor Schwarzenegger hopes to raise some cash by selling surplus state property.   Schwarzenegger Holds 'Great California Garage Sale'.   OK,  why does the state of California own a X-box 360? (That's a gaming system for those of you who don't know what that is).  Let alone a "surplus" one?

There is a reason the founding fathers didn't want the government to do much.    This is one of the reasons why.    The government is that relative that cannot hold on to money if his life depended on it.

Ever Wonder Why Most Americans Don't Want to Be Like Europeans

I think liberals wonder why most Americans reject most ideas that come from Europe.    Of course bad ideas should be rejected no matter where they come from.   However it seems many bad ideas that see the light of day in the last century or so have come from the elite of Europe.

Like this latest lame attempt to end racism.   European Groups Ban 'Racist' Everyday Phrases.    Liberals seem to think that minorities are offended by everyday language,  that may or may not make them sound inferior.    Its rooted in the can't offend at any expense no matter what.   Which always ends at discriminating against the majority (like Christians).

Will this nonsense end racism.  Not a chance!

Liberals in "Action": "Whale Wars" and Radical Environmentalists

I don't watch many "reality" type shows.   One that I have been watching lately is "Whale Wars",  believe it or not.   If you don't know what it is about,  it features the truly insane and unbalanced "Captain"  Paul Watson, one of the founders of the radical enviro group Greenpeace and the founder of the even more radical group Sea Shepards.

Every year the Sea Shepards head south on the ship "Steve Irwin" (all the way south, almost to Antarctica)  to harass Japanese whalers.   The show is almost comical in its portrayal of this group.   They probably think they come off as heroic but even editing cannot cover the inaptitude of the crew of this misfit  (calling him "Captain" is being very generous) Watson.

The crew is no surprise,  mostly "idealist" type younger people who probably truly think they are changing the world by being there.   If they truly knew what was going on,   none of them seem to know or care.   It makes for great TV as they go from one disaster or drama to the next.

But it does show the truth of today's radical environmental groups in regards to human life.  I have pointed this out a number of times on this blog.  They think very little of it.   Watson seems to care little about the safety of his mostly inexperienced  young crew.   The ship "Steve Irwin"  is a old piece of junk and is not rated to go as far south as they take it.    Its not a rated as a icebreaker, a requirement of operating that far south,  even though Sea Shepards once owned a icebreaker rated ship (the Canadian government seized it).  They take this ship into areas where they have no business being, like with ice cover (and get trapped at one point).    It breaks down constantly and they have no way of being rescued by anyone.

The first mate is Peter Brown, a long time friend and  hanger on of Watson (seems to be the only other crew member the age of Watson outside of the doctor).  He  is incompetent at any thing he does, and is not open to any ideas not his own or Watsons.    He almost kills a number of crew members as they tried a practice launching of a small boat by not paying attention to what he is doing.   He also was the only member opposed to a young woman crew member,  when she tried to improve the safety procedures (they appeared to have none) just because she had once served in the US Navy.   He is so "anti-establishment" that he cannot even accept basic safety procedures that are used by the US Navy (and every other ship on the sea).   He ignores the technology and instruments of the ship preferring his own gut (mostly faulty) instinct.

Never the less, he isn't liked much by the rest of the crew.   Thankfully he finally saw the writing on the wall and left the ship this season so the safety of the ship was a little better by him being gone.    But "Captain" Watson isn't very safe either.   He rams the "Steve Irwin" into the whalers ships a number of times endangering the crews of the whalers as much as his own.   He is so intent on doing something he doesn't think about what could happen if something really went wrong.   I would never feel safe with him as captain of any ship I would be on, or have anyone I know willing set foot on his ship.    He stages a "crisis" after two Sea Shepards board one of the whaling ships,  and claim to be held as hostages,  never mind the Japanese try to return them as fast as possible (by trying to throw them back overboard when they were boarding).

Even though the producers of the show are probably on Watsons side,  I don't think that the image that this show shows is what Watson would really want.    I think he hurts his cause more than anything.    Whaling is disappearing from most of the world on its own,  and spotlighting this only harden the ones that are still whaling.    One type of the whales hunted aren't even endangered.   They deny being pirates even though their own logo and flag are a pirate like design.    The new season,  the whalers have adapted to the Sea Shepards tactics much to the annoyance of the crew.     One of the tactics (stink bombs) they used was banned by the Dutch government ("Steve Irwin" is registered by the Dutch) though in the newest episode they seem to be doing it again (after the whalers seem to just ignore the Sea Shepards and instead of fleeing like before, whale right in front of them,  much to their horror).

So they are claiming to be enforcing laws of the UN (like there are laws of the UN, ha ha) but they are entitled to break others that are real laws, like the rules of the open seas.   How confusing is that?   They would be considered pirates for real had the Dutch not registered the "Steve Irwin".    Many TV observers of reality programing think that some show will someday feature someone dying.    This show may be the one that does.    Its a disaster waiting to happen.

Cost of Government Day is Today! August 12

Today is the day that the average American has earned enough money to pay his share of the cost of government,  according to the Americans for Tax Reform.

It is a full TWENTY-SIX days later then last year due to TARP (thats all the bailouts folks).    It is also twenty-three days later then the last high of July 20 all the way back in 1982.

That means that 224 days go by before your making money for yourself!

It will be far later in the year if some of these bills in Congress get passed like healthcare and cap and trade.

WHY ISN'T THERE MASSIVE TAX REVOLTS GOING ON?

The government is taking far too much from its own citizens.   Cost of government day should be early in January not in the waning days of late summer.

Its time for a CHANGE,  and what is coming from Washington these days is far more of the same, that got us to this point today!

Oh, The Irony! The Community Organizes Against Government Medicine

B.O. first "job" out of college was as a "community organizer"  on the south side of Chicago.    He organized the community to protest asbestos in a public housing project.   Do you think the residents would have come up with this on their own?  I doubt it,  since most would be more interested in normal repairs that the project needed far more, I think few really cared about asbestos.

Fast Forward to Today!   The majority of Americans are clearly opposed to more government in medicine.   They are protesting finally,  realizing that we could end up with the same lousy government "healthcare" that much of the world suffers with.   This includes nations like Canada and England!

Does B.O. realize that Obamacare will kill thousands of Canadians?   Where do you think they go when government healthcare in Canada lets them down?   Government healthcare clearly is a complete failure!

So different types of people are protesting for a CHANGE.    Not the goofy hippy liberal types with their "save the whales (note: whales are not endangered)" but normal middle class folks you don't normally see at protests (OK, you see them at pro-life events).

THEY ARE CALLED MOBS BY DEMOCRATS AND THE "MAINSTREAM MEDIA"!

Huh,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If there was a grassroots thing going, this is it.

Why Is It Called "Reform" When It Clearly Isn't: One Lie Of The "Healthcare" Debate

One of the things that really bugs me about bills in Congress is the misnamed,  misleading and downright incorrect names that they have.

They call it Healthcare "Reform".    It isn't by a long shot.    If anything it will make things far worse.    It will do the opposite of what they say it will do.    AND THEY KNOW IT!

CAP and TRADE is another one.   It will make energy far more expensive and it will probably cost millions their jobs.   But if you take them by their word,  you would think the opposite.

Then there is that horrible bill for the labor unions.   Talk about the loss of freedom in that one.

Why aren't people saying most of this nonsense is unconstitutional?   Isn't it clear that most of these proposals are far too reaching in scope?

Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Joe Biden ‘We Have to Go Spend Money to Keep From Going Bankrupt’

What a doofus,  our Vice President says I.

‘We Have to Go Spend Money to Keep From Going Bankrupt’,  he says.

Is he insane or what?

Normal people know that if you spend more money then you got,  you go bankrupt.   Not the other way around.   Are these guys that insulated from reality?

Government spending is what is making the country go bankrupt.   When the government spends our money we are not spending it.  Period.

Why is that so hard to understand.    Its simple economics!

Joe Biden sure is setting himself up as one of the dumbest VP's in recent times.   Image how the press would treat him if he was a Republican,  but since he isn't nothing!

Obama's Teleprompter Has Had It: Ends It All By Crashing To Floor

B.O. had little to say today.    Why would that be,  since he loves the sound of himself talking.    His Teleprompter is broken!   No, really!!   "Oops: Obama's Teleprompter Breaks Mid-Speech".

I didn't think one could wear out a teleprompter.    I guess many teleprompters will give their lives in the next four years so B.O. can talk endlessly about nonsense.

Why Are People Surprised That B.O. Does Liberal Things? Colin Powell Now Questioning Huge Spending.

I really don't know why people,  that should know better, are surprised at what B.O. is doing.    Even though the "mainstream" media tried its best to cover the truth about Obama,  the real plan was clear and out there to be seen.

After rejecting the kind of presidential candidate ("moderate" McCain) that he thinks Republicans should be running for president every time.     Colin Powell is now questioning the spending of the Obama Administration

Duh,  what did he think Obama was going to do?

Are people's heads that deep in the sand to ignore the clear facts.   Facts even B.O. wouldn't even deny.   Everybody should have known that Obama was going to push liberal programs.   Why?   Because even B.O.  said he would!     Did the snow job by the media fool that many into thinking that B.O. was some moderate or even a little conservative?

There was no question that Obama is a liberal,  and a very far left liberal at that.

Why anyone would think he would moderate his position in office is crazy.   Out of anyone who doesn't have to moderate its Obama.   He can get away with just about anything now.    He has no reason to moderate yet.    Nor does it look like he will have to anytime soon.

Colin Powell will someday regret endorsing Obama over McCain.    McCain is the type of candidate that many outside the Republican Party think they should be running.    The kind of candidate the party shouldn't be running.

The conservative majority had no major candidate to vote for in 2008.    Combined with a energetic liberal candidate, it was a recipe for disaster.   A moderate that excited no one cannot win.   So now we are stuck with the most liberal president who thinks he has a huge mandate for change.   Change that doesn't have a chance of working and is opposed by most Americans.   Including many that voted for Obama!

I am glad he is criticizing the person he voted for.   We need as many people as we can telling Obama no.     But he should have known that what was going to happen with a President Obama.

Al Franken Successful At Stealing Election in Minnesota

Norm Coleman finally gave up on trying to reclaim his Senate seat today.    The courts ruled again him and the voters of Minnesota. Chicago Tribune story here.

Franken will undoubtedly be one of the worst Senators  that  Washington will ever see.   He is a small, unfunny fool.   Hopefully voters will be able to remove him next time.   Unfortunately not electing him the first time doesn't make that easy.     At least Coleman kept him out of office for almost a half year.

Not good news for anybody.

Cheney: Hopes U.S. Sacrifice Doesn't Go To Waste

Former Vice President Cheney today remarked that he hoped that U.S. sacrifice doesn't go to "waste".

Read about it here.

The media will likely mess up with what he is saying once again.    Like the recent,  "I am surprised we haven't been hit hard again".  Only the "mainstream media" would mess something like that.    I guess we will see what they say about that.

It's interesting that the media has been putting more into covering Cheney lately.   It just shows the bias they have against him.
