If Washington DC was actually interested in balancing the budget, the
cuts would involve a number with a T in it. Since it isn't, and may
not even have a number with a B in it. Its not interested in stopping
spending. It would rather drive off the cliff. Most government
employees and politicians really don't believe the government could go
bankrupt and be insolvent. I was reading a liberal board the other
day, and they had a thread documenting how they believed the US
government could never go bankrupt. Impossible they say!!! They are so
delusional on the subject, they just don't believe it could run out of
money. (Never mind it really is broke already).
The only ones
interested in stopping the spending are the Tea Party people in the
Republican party. No Democrats and most of the Republicans aren't.
We
will have to drive off the cliff to solve it, none of these little cuts
will do it (not that we shouldn't do the little cuts, because it will be lots of little cuts that will do a good part of doing it). Unfortunately
that is going to be much harder on folks because it will happen
suddenly. Imagine one day when Social Security goes away because the
Fed cannot borrow anymore. Imagine the day the military misses
payroll. That is going to happen if we don't stop spending money we do
not have.
That's why it needs to be done now, before this crisis become a disaster. So people can make other plans. People are going to learn the hard way that they cannot depend on the government. We can solve this problem the hard way or we can solve it the REALLY HARD WAY. It seems we are going to have to do it the really hard way.
We can do the easy cuts now, like cutting PBS and NPR. Yes, those are easy cuts, that's a couple hundred million with just those two. Phase in the harder ones over a little more time (the reason for not waiting anymore).
I think if Congress were serious about spending, it would cut the full 1.5 trillion deficit (just THIS years overspending) for this year alone. Things need to stay cut too, PBS should never get funded again. The debt ceiling shouldn't be raised no matter what either. No spending can occur without the ability to float debt. Remember the Feds borrow 40% of what gets spent. That's why we cannot afford Obamacare, why Medicare and SS have to change fundamentally.
I am glad there have been some cuts. However its a drop in the bucket. Its not even 1%. Its a start, but its not even a down payment.
I think the debt bomb could take down the federal government from within. Yes, its that serious a problem. With all the challenges in the world today, the last thing the world needs is a powerless USA. We cannot have a military, arguably the most important federal function, without cash. Even if we pulled out of everywhere, we still need to defend our own borders.
Hoping for Real Change!
