As a taxpayer of the state of Indiana, I oppose the bail out "plan" for state governments. Indiana does not need to be bailed out. Nor do we need to bail out other states who were not responsible in spending taxpayers money.
Indiana is one of the few states currently in the black. State government got that way by cutting spending. Our current Governor, Republican Mitch Daniels, made it one of his campaign promises to get the state out of the red. Which he did.
So why can't the other states do so as well? Why do Indiana taxpayers need to bail out another states like Illinois or Michigan that didn't do anything to control its spending?
Why would any governor risk his or her popularity to do the right thing financially, if they know they will be bailed out. Had Mitch Daniels known he could be bailed out, would he have done what he did? He is unpopular with many for the spending cuts he had to make to balance the budget.
No state will even balance its books if bailouts are to be had. Why bother living in a budget if you can spend whatever.
We are mortgaging our future with this accounting nightmare. When the bill is due, nobody at the table will be able to pay.
