Are they nuts? The cook county sales tax (already very, very high) is going up! again! To a mind boggling 10.25%, which would make it the highest in the nation. It would meet up with the insanely high restaurant tax in Chicago, that I have written about in the past.
Don't they know people will shop in other places like Indiana and online? I guess not. Indiana has the lowest sales tax in the Chicago area so come on over and save some money folks. They added new people to the employment rolls in Cook County so this increase is more then a budget hole "fix". Cook County will do nothing to save and spend less. It will drive all the economic activities out of the area. Here a piece in the
Tribune on people buying in Indiana or other counties instead of Cook County.
How long is it going to take to get people really interested in tax reform and reductions? It sure seems like it will take a lot. I can tell you, I avoid spending money in Illinois.
